Have a Series, Mookie Betts

Unless you were stranded on a desert island this past weekend, you are probably well aware that Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts had one of his best series since being acquired by the Dodgers from the Boston Red Sox on February 20, 2020, (along with 36-year-old left-hander David Price and cash) for popular Dodgers outfielder Alex Verdugo, catcher Connor Wong, and Dodgers top infield prospect Jeter Downs.

All the 29-year-old Nashville, TN native and fifth-round draft pick in 2011 by the Red Sox out of Overton High School in Nashville did in the just-concluded three-game series with the Chicago Cubs at historic Wrigley Field was go 5-for-14 (.357) with one double, one home run, and five Runs Batted In.

All five of those RBIs came in Game-2 of the series on Saturday evening – the second game of a doubleheader as a result of Friday night’s game being postponed due to heavy rain in ‘The windy City‘ – three on a bases-clearing double, and two on a ninth-inning two-run home run.

Betts went 1-for-5 with an RBI in the series (and doubleheader) opener on Saturday, and 2-for-5 in Sunday’s series finale, accounting for two of the Dodgers’ three total hits in their 6-2 win.

“We had some good at-bats, I thought we took our walks, I think we had eight or nine walks, something like that, so we had traffic, we just couldn’t get that big hit,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after Saturday’s doubleheader nightcap. “But fortunately, Mookie, with that two-out bases-clearing double was big.

“He’s been on the come; Mookie’s been swinging the bat really well,” Roberts added. “I thought he barreled four balls tonight, and to hit the last one, a home run, the extra insurance runs, was big.”

For good measure, the five-time All-Star, five-time Gold Glover, four-time Silver Slugger, two-time World Series champion, former MLB Player of the Year, former American League batting champion, and former Wilson Overall Defensive Player of the Year also made several outstanding Mookie-Betts-like defensive plays during the three games in Chicago.

Have a series, Mookie Betts!
