Although there has been no official confirmation from the team, it was reported on social media on New Year’s Day that the Dodgers had signed soon-to-be (on January 30) 32-year-old infielder Eddy Alvarez to a Minor League contract, presumably with an invitation to Major League Spring Training camp if/when that happens. Per MLB Trade Rumors, the announcement came from Alvarez himself on his Instagram page:
Over the past two seasons, Alvarez, who is listed as a third baseman, second baseman, and shortstop, appeared in a combined 36 games with the Marlins, posting a .188/.287/.287/.574 slash line with one home run and eight RBI. Of those 36 games (34 on defense), 20 were at third base, 13 at second base, and one at shortstop, at which he posted fielding percentages of .920, 1.000, and 1.000, respectively.
As every Dodger fan knows, beloved Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner is under contract with the team through the 2022 season, with a team option for 2023. That said, the Long Beach, CA native and seventh-round draft pick in 2006 by the Cincinnati Reds out of Cal State Fullerton turned 37 years old on November 23 and will most certainly need an occasional blow – potential injuries notwithstanding.
Dodgers fans also know that 27-year-old Edwin Rios, who figures to make the Dodgers Opening Day 26-man roster, appeared in 36 games at third base over the past three seasons, along with 28 games at first base and three in the outfield. In other words, barring a complete meltdown during Spring Training (or an injury), Rios figures to be Turner’s back-up at the hot corner. As such, Alvarez will most likely begin his Dodgers career at Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Regardless, and if his Instagram post is accurate, welcome to the Dodgers fam, Eddy!
