Speedy Old Friend Alert

On Saturday afternoon, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported on Twitter that 33-year-old one-time Dodgers fan-favorite Dee Strange-Gordon had agreed to a minor league deal with the Washington Nationals.

As Passan notes, minor league deals are allowed during the ongoing MLB lockout. That said, there is an exceptionally good chance that the Windermere, FL native and fourth-round draft pick by the Dodgers in 2008 out of Seminole State College in Sanford, FL will be added to the Nationals 40-man roster when (if) the lockout ends.

As Dodger fans recall, Gordon is the son of veteran right-hander Tom Gordon, who pitched in the major leagues for 21 seasons with eight different teams. The Sebring, FL native – affectionately known as “Flash” – retired in 2009 at age 41 with a career record of 138-126 and a career ERA of 3.96 – certainly not Hall of Fame numbers, but 21 years? I mean, who does that these days?

In his four MLB seasons with the Dodgers, Dee slashed an impressive .272/.314/.345/.658. And though he was never known for his power (four home runs in 1,230 at-bats), he was known for his speed (130 stolen bases). Again, who does that these days?

As they say: “Speed never slumps.”

In addition to being popular among Dodgers fans, Gordon was also highly thought of by his teammates and coaches. As such, and despite the uncertainty of the 2022 MLB season, it’s probably safe to say that Gordon received quite a few calls and text messages from his former Dodgers, Marlins, and Mariners teammates to congratulate him on his MiLB deal with the Nats.

Godspeed to you, Dee – Literally.
