Heading into Friday’s Cactus League game against the Texas Rangers at Camelback Ranch, 30-year-old Dodgers first baseman Max Muncy was 3-for-27 (.111), with six walks and eight strikeouts.
To say that the Midland, TX native and fifth-round draft pick in 2012 by the Oakland Athletics out of Baylor University was struggling would be a generous understatement … he flat-out sucked.
But when the guy who became a living legend for telling former San Francisco Giants All-Star left-hander Madison Bumgarner to “…go get it out of the ocean” exited Friday’s game after the fourth inning, he had matched his Spring Training total in hits with a 3-for-3 day – including a double – and had upped his batting average to The Mendoza Line.
“When he’s going to the middle of the field, the big part of the field, he’s at his best, and when he starts to get too aggressive to the pull side, then he’s not so great,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after his team’s 7-2 pounding of the Rangers. “To see him use the big part of the field today, I thought was really good. Yeah, a really good day overall for Max.”
Obviously, one game does not a Spring Training make, but it hard to ignore that Max Muncy appears to have finally found his stroke.
…and not a moment too soon.
Play Ball!

Most likely Max had a slow start. He’ll come around.
Enjoyed the comments on yesterday’s TV broadcast regarding Muncy — that he was swinging the bat well, even his foul balls were good signs. I am confident that over a full season he will put up offensive numbers like he did in 2018-19. I think the Dodgers made a wise decision by making Muncy a full time defensive first baseman. I think his defense will improve to being above average for the position.
if CT3 and Lux are both raking. would any of you consider playing CT3 at 3B and JT at 1B?
