Although there has been no official announcement from team officials, the Athletic‘s Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Dodgers have signed 31-year-old right-handed reliever Tommy Kahnle (pronounced Cain-lee) to a two-year deal for a combined $5.25 million.
Per MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, Kahnle will earn $750,000 in 2021, $3.45 million in 2022, and will be able to earn another $750,000 in potential incentives.
The Latham, NY native and fifth-round draft pick by the New York Yankees in 2010 out of Lynn University in Boca Raton, FL, underwent Tommy John surgery in August. He made one relief appearance for the Yankees during the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season, allowing only one hit and striking out three of the six batters he faced before being sidelined for the remainder of the season. He will, in all likelihood, miss the entire 2021 season as well.
Kahnle owns a career record of 9-9 with a 3.82 ERA over his seven-year MLB career. He also has four career saves, with his last coming in 2018.
Although it is way too early to even speculate what Kahnle’s role will be with the Dodgers, he figures to be a late-innings arm, perhaps even the team’s closer, with Kenley Jansen and Joe Kelly slated to become free agents after the 2021 season.

I enjoyed the read and appreciate the info once again. Thanks Ron!
In the grand scheme of things, this is a relatively low-risk / potential high-reward signing – very Andrew Friedman-esque.
I have no problem with it. Plenty of guys come back strong from Tommy John surgery and depth at the back end of the rotation as you mentioned is a no-brainer.
Per Jessie’s response on my other comment. Nobody is on my radar to truthful, I figured this one was on very few radars is all. I don’t spend much time trying to add and subtract players. A few years ago, I was more active in this regards, but it drove me nuts and was like a job, so these days I just try to find the sense in things.
This offseason is so boring it’s like a Shakespeare play much ado about nothing.
The only thing that matters as Queen sang We Are The Champions.
Merry Christmas 🎄⛄
