Baseball, The Floor is Yours

For many, the Super Bowl is the single biggest sporting event of the year. It marks the culmination of a grueling 17-week/16-game regular season followed by a six-week-long postseason, after which one team emerges as Super Bowl Champions. But for many more, the Super Bowl has a much greater distinction – It marks the official beginning of baseball season.

Oh sure, pitchers and catchers don’t officially report for spring training for another week, and the first regular-season games are still a month away, but for all intents and purposes, “It’s time for Dodger baseball,” as the great Vin Scully would say.

Although rumors are still running rampant that the Dodgers are on the cusp of a blockbuster trade involving Boston Red Sox four-time All-Star, four-time Gold Glover, three-time Silver Slugger and 2018 American League MVP outfielder Mookie Betts, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts’ team is – and has been all off-season – pretty much poised to win their unprecedented eighth consecutive National League West Division title and are already favorites to win their third National League Championship in the last four seasons.

Many believe that a trade for All-Star outfielder Mookie Betts is imminent.

But as we all know, our national pastime is played “between the lines,” not on paper or in a casino sportsbook.

But the moment that Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid got GatorAded and was presented the prestigious Vince Lombardi trophy, it officially marked the end of the 2019 football season and the beginning of the 2020 baseball season.

  1. The Super Bowl is actually the only football game I watch and I’ve been watching it for many years now. I can’t remember how many. It’s like a tradition to me now. This year I really loved the halftime show, I think it was great.

I posted this on Twitter, Joe:

So apparently when Shakira did this [that tongue wag thing] during last night’s Super Bowl halftime show, it was her “expressing joy and happiness.” It is an Arab vocal expression called ‘zaghrouta.’ Elements of it can also be found in other cultures including music in the Balkans.

      Who knew?

      • And for the record here, I am soooooo glad the Chiefs won , and I was rooting for them because I did NOT want a team that resides in SF to win anything. Ron, I think ya know where I am going with this….

I do indeed. I actually didn’t have a horse in the race, but that SF thing became a rooting factor. That and the fact that one of the KC coaches used to coach at Hart High School in my home town.

  2. Uncle Ned says:

I am so happy that MLB World Series, playoffs, regular and preseason games do NOT have “halftime shows”.
