Alex Verdugo’s badge of honor

The great Benjamin Franklin said it best:

“In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”

Ben almost got it right. He forgot to include “…and Dodgers outfielder Alex Verdugo always having a dirty uniform.”

Then again, how could one of our country’s founding fathers possibly have known in 1789 what we all know now? It was, after all, 207 years before the extremely popular soon-to-be (on May 15) 23-year-old Dodgers outfielder was even born.

If Benjamin Franklin would have known, his famous saying would have been “…death, taxes, and Alex Verdugo always having a dirty uniform.”

Although this may seem like a silly or even ridiculous thing to write about, I challenge you to prove me wrong. I can all but guarantee you that if Verdugo gets into a game, he will soon be wearing an impressive amount of stadium dirt on his uniform from whichever respective ballpark he is playing in. In fact, I will go so far as to say that I do guarantee it.

Oh sure, you can certainly argue that Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner always … always has pine tar from his bat on the back of the left shoulder of his jersey even before his first at-bat of every game in which he plays. But when you see the front of Verdugo’s uniform covered in dirt, you absolutely positively know that he was – and always will be – right in the thick of the action day in and day out.

As for his numbers, the extremely popular Tucson, Arizona native and Dodgers second round draft pick in 2014 out of Sahuaro High School has an alien-like .346 batting average (second on the team to only Cody Bellinger‘s ridiculous .415), a .376 on-base percentage, a .605 slugging percentage, for an outstanding .981 OPS. He has also slugged five doubles, two triples, and four home runs, while driving in 17.

If you had to describe Alex Verdugo in a single word, it would probably be something like “gamer” or perhaps “gritty.” But whatever word you use, keep getting dirty, Alex.

…We LOVE it!

  1. In any situation, especially when the Dodgers are losing, I can’t wait to see Verdugo or Bellinger get up to the plate. I can’t remember when I had so much confidence in players, in years, regardless of how clean their uniforms are.
