Not Getting It Done

In the just completed three-game home series against the Chicago Cubs, a series that drew a combined 158,719 fans to Chavez Ravine, the Dodgers went 4-for-14 (.286) with runners in scoring position. Unfortunately, they also stranded 20 runners on base, which is absolutely unacceptable for a team with the highest payroll in Major League Baseball and a roster that has several of the best players in the game on it.

During the three games (of which the Dodgers won only the first), international superstar Shohei Ohtani, considered by many to be the Babe Ruth of our generation, went a combined 1-for-12 (.083) with three strikeouts; eight-time All-Star first baseman Freddie Freeman 1-for-7 (.143) with two Ks; eight-time All-Star Mookie Betts 2-for-10 (.200) with one K; super utility Tommy Edman 2-for-10 (.200) with one K; and fan-favorite Max Muncy 2-for-5 (.400) with three Ks in the two games in which he played.

Of these five, who have hit a combined 15 home runs during the now 17-game-old season, only Edman homered during the three games against the North Siders. Muncy has yet to homer this season.

Of the Dodgers Fearsome Fivesome, only Edman homered in the three-game set against the Cubs – a 423-foot three-run shot into the Left Field Pavilion in Friday’s 3-0 Dodgers win.(SportsNet LA)
You knew it was going to be another one of those games when Ohtani led off Sunday’s series finale with a called third strike that was ‘right down Broadway‘. (ESPN)

“I think it’s just a bumpy two weeks. We got a long time, we got a long season to go and a lot can happen,” Betts said, following Sunday’s loss. “This isn’t the first time we’ve sucked for two weeks. So, it just happens that it’s right now. We panic, things get worse. We don’t panic, and then it looks like we don’t care. So, what are we supposed to do?”

Please don’t panic, Mookie.

The good news is that the Dodgers have 145 games remaining in the 2025 regular season to Get It Done.
