‘Twas Casey at the Bat

International superstar Shohei Ohtani is 2-for-7 (.286) with three walks and two strikeouts in his 10 plate appearances through the first two games of the 2024 National League Championship Series.

Although most Major Leaguers would kill for a .286 NLCS batting average, it is rather un-Ohtani-like and brought to mind the timeless classic poem Casey at the Bat written by Ernest Thayer in 1888. In the unlikely event that you have never heard or read it, here it is:

The outlook wasn’t brilliant for the Mudville nine that day;the score stood four to two, with but one inning more to play. And then when Cooney died at first, and Barrows did the same, a sickly silence fell upon the patrons of the game.

A straggling few got up to go in deep despair. The restclung to that hope which springs eternal in the human breast;they thought, if only Casey could get but a whack at that –they’d put up even money, now, with Casey at the bat.

’twas Casey at the Bat.
