‘You’re Not Going To Pitch Well Every Game’

If you missed Sunday’s series finale between the Dodgers and San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park, you are among the lucky ones. Following Saturday’s 14-7 shellacking of The Hated Ones, the other Dodgers showed up on Sunday afternoon, mustering only four runs and eight hits to the Giants 10 runs and 16 hits.

“The bullpen’s been great. Unfortunately, when you’re on the road in a minus game, you only have to cover eight, that saved pen, put us in a position obviously to win the next series,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said postgame. “It never feels good losing a series, but, you know, we’re going home now, so the starters have got to go out there and do what they do, because now you’ve got to cover nine innings at home.

“The bullpen has certainly been used a lot, they’ve been fantastic. Off-day comes at a great time,” Roberts added. “But we’ve got Bobby (Miller) going on Tuesday, and he’s got to go out there and pitch like himself to, you know, put us in a chance to win a ballgame,”

Nine of those 10 Giants runs, all earned, were charged to 35-year-old Dodgers starting left-hander James Paxton, who entered Sunday’s contest with a 7-1 record and 3.39 ERA, which is now 7-2 and 4.28 respectively.

“They were just on the fastball today,” Paxton told SportsNet LA’s Kirsten Watson postgame. “We tried to go with some other things, but yeah, they were just all over it today.”

One of those fastballs “…they were just all over…” was a 92.9-MPH four-seamer right down the middle that Giants third baseman Matt Chapman crushed for a 359-foot two-run home run down the left field line in the bottom of the fourth to give the Giants a then 9-0 lead.

“It’s not a straight line, you’re not going to pitch well every game, you know. You’re gonna have games like today, and I’ll keep working, come out ready to go next time,” Paxton added. “Today just wasn’t a good one, so I’ll get ready for the next one and get back at it.”

It’s definitely time to “…get back at it.”
