It’s one of the earliest sayings we learned as kids:
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
A quick look at Dodgers right-hander Alex Vesia‘s stats 15 games into the 2024 season confirms he is broke.
In his last two appearances on April 9 and 10 against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field, the Alpine, CA native and 17th round draft pick in 2018 by the Miami Marlins out of California State University East Bay (who turns 28 tomorrow) faced seven Twins batters, to whom he made a total of 23 pitches, of which 16 were strikes.
That’s the good news.
The bad news is that he allowed two hits to those seven Twins batters, both of which were home runs.
As noted in Vesia’s stats, those two home runs (plus one additional hit) came in only 6.2 innings pitched thus far this season.
“You know, I think with Alex, it’s aah… you know, just seems like right now, when he does, you know, not make a pitch, ’cause it was, aah… close to him, it was thigh-high, it was a good pitch for him to hit, and to his credit, you know, obviously the kid had a big day.” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts answered when asked about Vesia’s outing on Wednesday. “But you got to be able to mix and match your sequence, you know. You just can’t pitch with just your fastball.”
Alex Vesia is broke.
