It is a quote made famous in the popular 1988 baseball movie Bull Durham, when The Nuke LaLoosh (played by actor Tim Robbins) said:
“Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains.”
On Friday night, the Dodgers didn’t win and didn’t lose, because after the visiting Cincinnati Reds hit in the top of the 5th inning and before the Dodgers could bat in the bottom half of the inning, the skies above Camelback Ranch in Glendale, AZ absolutely opened up (for the second consecutive day), and the game was postponed.
Because the game didn’t go the requisite five innings (for the second consecutive day), it isn’t considered an official game. As such, it doesn’t count in the Cactus League standings, nor do any of the individual stats that happened during it.
As you can see by the line score, 33-year-old Reds right-hander Nick Martinez had a perfect game going when the tarp was pulled as the rain continued and lightning neared the ballpark.
Although Spring Training games are often referred to as “meaningless,” try convincing Nick Martinez of this.
