It took a while, but Dodgers catcher Will Smith and utility infielder/outfielder Chris Owings finally joined the Dodgers Spring Training hit parade with their respective first home runs, helping their team to a 7-1 rout over the Texas Rangers at Camelback Ranch on Saturday.
The 29-year-old Smith has appeared in seven of the Dodgers (thus far) 14 Spring Training contests, in which he is 3-for-19 (.227) in his combined 22 plate appearances, with one walk and three strikeouts as the team’s primary backstop and occasional DH.
The 32-year-old Owings, an 11-year MLB veteran, has appeared in 10 games and is 7-for-21 (.333) in his combined 24 plate appearances, with two doubles, three walks, and 10 Ks.
Although Spring Training games are often referred to as “meaningless,” you can bet that Smith and Owings are glad to have their first springer (Spring Training dinger) out of the way.
