Not that there was any chance of it happening anyway, but late Saturday evening it was (very) widely reported that popular former Dodgers outfielder Cody Bellinger had re-signed with the Chicago Cubs on a reported three-year/$80 million deal that includes opt-outs following the 2024 and 2025 seasons.
As Dodgers fans well know, it was established early this off-season that Dodgers President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman had zero intention of bringing the 28-year-old Scottsdale, AZ native and Dodgers fourth round draft pick in 2013 out of Hamilton High School in Chandler, AZ back to LA. In fact, the Dodgers were not even among the teams rumored to be in on Belly.
That said, the extremely popular former Dodger posted a respectable .248/.332/.487/.819 slash line during his six seasons with the Dodgers that included 152 home runs, 422 RBI, being named the 2017 National League Rookie of the Year, the 2019 MLB MVP, being named to two All-Star Games, and winning a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger award.
Although there are undoubtedly mixed feelings among Dodgers fans about Bellinger, it’s hard not to root for him.
…except when the Dodgers play the Cubs, of course.
Play Ball!
