When news broke on Thursday morning that the Boston Red Sox had fired Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom, you could hear a collective “What took so long?” echoing throughout the streets of Boston … and the entire baseball world.
Although there may be some – or perhaps many – unfamiliar with the name Chaim Bloom, he will forever be remembered as ‘The guy who traded Mookie Betts.‘
Forever.
In case you may have missed it, Mookie Betts is the best player in the game right now and the Babe Ruth of our generation.
That trade, of course, was to the Los Angeles Dodgers on February 10, 2020, along with David Price and cash, for Jeter Downs, Alex Verdugo and Connor Wong.
“While parting ways is not taken lightly, today signals a new direction for our club,” said Red Sox Principal Owner John Henry in a prepared statement. “Our organization has significant expectations on the field and while Chaim’s efforts in revitalizing our baseball infrastructure have helped set the stage for the future, we will today begin a search for new leadership. Everyone who knows Chaim has a deep appreciation and respect for the kind of person he is. His time with us will always be marked by his professionalism, integrity, and an unwavering respect for our club and its legacy.”
The business of baseball is often a brutal one, with hirings and firings of baseball executives occurring almost daily. That said, you would be hard pressed to find even one Dodgers fan who isn’t eternally grateful to ‘the guy who traded Mookie Betts‘ to their beloved team.
Play Ball!
