For those old enough to remember, it was an exciting time for LA sports fans. The original Los Angeles Rams (you know what I mean) had a front line of Merlin Olsen, Rosey Grier, Deacon Jones, and Lamar Lundy, who were affectionately called the ‘Fearsome Foursome’ for their extremely fierce and aggressive play in the NFL.
Move over, boys, there’s a new ‘Fearsome Foursome’ in town – Dodgers right fielder/second baseman Mookie Betts, third baseman Max Muncy, first baseman Freddie Freeman, and outfielder/designated hitter J.D. Martinez, who currently have 106, 105, 101, and 100 RBIs on the season respectively, with Martinez joining this (very) elite club with his linedrive two-run home run to right-center field field in the top of the first inning off of Colorado Rockies right-hander Chris Flexen on Thursday evening to give his team an early 2-0 lead, despite eventually losing to Colorado by a lopsided score of 14-5.
“He should just hit a two-run home run right now, do it with one swing,” former Dodger and current AM 570 LA Sports radio broadcaster Rick Monday said live on the air seconds before Martinez did just that. (Great call, Mo!).
It is the fifth time that the Miami, FL native and 20th-round draft pick in 2009 by the Houston Astros out of Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL has had 100 or more RBIs in a single season, with the last occurring in 2019 while a member of the Boston Red Sox.
“It’s special, you know. A lot of good teams, really really good offenses and I’ve never been on a team that’s done that,” Martinez told SportsNet LA’s Kirsten Watson postgame. “So, it speaks volumes for this team, and you know how deep they are up and down the lineup.
“You know, I feel like certain guys that… it starts with who’s on base, that’s the biggest thing,” Martinez added. “I mean, one through nine, it’s just, you always find guys that find their way to get on base, whether it’s walking, whether it’s getting a hit, or driving the ball, but there’s always guys on base.”
What makes Martinez’s accomplishment all the more remarkable is that he has appeared in only 110 of the Dodgers 159 games this season.
“J.D. missed a good chunk of time this year, so for him to hit 30 (home runs) and drive in a hundred is really impressive, so, it just speaks to how talented these guys are,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said postgame of Martinez and the rest of his ‘Fearsome Foursome.’
Be fearful, opposing teams. Be very fearful of LA’s new ‘Fearsome Foursome.’
Play Ball!
