Freeman In Great Company

It was a risky move for sure, but it is future Hall of Famer Freddie Freeman we’re talking about here. And if we have learned anything about the 34-year-old in Villa Park, CA native and second round draft pick in 2007 by the Atlanta Braves from El Modena High School in Orange, CA, it’s that everything Freeman does is well calculated and thought out.

Freeman knew that it would take an absolutely perfect throw from Rockies left fielder Nolan Jones to nail him. It was almost an absolutely perfect throw from Rockies left fielder Nolan Jones.

Almost.

It happened in the top of the ninth inning of Game-2 Tuesday’s day/night doubleheader between the Dodgers and the Colorado Rockies and at Coors Field in downtown Denver. Freeman sliced a double to left field, which Jones scooped up on the run and fired a bullet to Rockies second baseman Brendan Rodgers, but not before the speedie Dodgers first baseman slid safely into the bag. So close was the play that Rockies manager Bud Black challenged the call of second base umpire Ben May, which stood.

Freeman’s career-best 58th double on Tuesday night tied him for 10th most in MLB history. (SportsNet LA)
“After review, the call on the field is confirmed. The runner is safe.” – MLB crew chief umpire C.B. Bucknor. (SportsNet LA)

Freeman’s double also added his name to an elite list of former Dodger greats:

For good measure (and Freddie being Freddie), he also slugged his 27th home run of the season, a two-run shot to right-center field in the top of the sixth inning of Game-2, to make it a (then) 9-2 game in the eventual 11-2 Dodgers win.

…all of this with five regular-season games remaining.

Point of information for dodger insider, Herman’s stats in 153 games, Snider 149 games – last night was Freddie’s 156 game this season. Not to diminish his accomplishments but never to forget the difference in regular season schedules for past greats.
