The Clock is Ticking Down

The 2023 trade deadline is fast approaching (6:00 PM EDT August 1) and the Dodgers front office has yet to make a trade that substantially improves the roster for their charge toward this year’s World Series. Fans have come to know that Andrew Friedman, the guy in charge of Dodgers roster construction, is methodical, never rushed, and protective of the team’s pool of top prospects.

Friedman also knows that any trade he makes for pitching will not better position the Dodgers for this year’s World Championship unless Julio Urías returns to form and Clayton Kershaw remains healthy. Pitchers of that quality are simply not available for the price the Dodgers will be willing to pay.

So goes Kershaw, so go the Dodgers.

Another consideration is the availability of injured pitchers: starters Walker Buehler and Ryan Pepiot, and relievers Daniel Hudson, Shelby Miller, Jimmy Nelson, and Blake Treinen. While it is too much to hope for all of them to be available this season, it is likely that several will be ready to contribute when rosters expand in September.

The recent video of Buehler pitching to hitters at the team’s Camelback Ranch facility in Glendale Arizona is very encouraging, and Pepiot is basically repeating Spring Training as he rehabs at the team’s Triple-A affiliate in Oklahoma City but has only thrown 135 competitive pitches. It is possible that both pitchers will pitch for the Dodgers in September.

Getting Buehler back could be the difference maker for the 2023 Dodgers.

Dodgers will likely make another trade or two before the deadline, but don’t expect Friedman to give up high potential pitchers like Bobby Miller and Emmet Sheehan, or sell low on top catching prospect Diego Cartaya who has only slashed .181/.262/.351 for the team’s Double-A team in Tulsa Oklahoma.

Tick tock, tick tock.

    First question
Is Cartaya taking batting lessons from Barnes.?
Did M.Grove switch bodies with N.Syndagaard?????
Does Heyward understand that Roberto Clemente couldn’t have thrown out the Reds Phenom De la Rosa at the plate??

    • Jesse Pearce says:

Watched video of Cartaya hitting — he is HUGE and looking for home run every at bat. Great question about Noah Grove. Dodgers outfielders (other than Betts) have made many questionable throws this season.

  2. Mark Salas says:

I don’t think we have a choice of not moving Grove, Pepiot for frontline pitching help. L Lynn may help but a bit of a reclamation project based on this years 6.47 era, and 28 bombs…we need Verlander. CWS are still in play with D Cease and LRs Jr..Just Sayin…

    • Jesse Pearce says:

If the Cardinals will trade Flaherty for Grove, Phil Bickford, and Justin Bruihl the Dodgers should jump on that trade

  3. Stevenbendodger says:

Have no problem with that trade proposal.
They would be crazy not to.
    What about Rodriguez on Tigers?
    What would it take.?
Are the Dodgers still in on Canha?
Or do we go with Kiki, Rosario and CT3
    Against lefties.

    • Jesse Pearce says:

      Excellent questions.

Rodriguez only if Tigers will take back a reasonable return as though he is a rental. Technically, he is under contract for three more seasons, but he can only opt out of that contract after this season. Perhaps Michael Grove and Landon Knack type package in return?

Rosario helps with the RH bat, but Taylor just continues to K too much. Perhaps Garrett Cooper from Miami who crushes LH pitching. Primarily a first baseman, DH — but can play LF a little.

Read that White Sox want to unload Grandal — if they will pay most of his remaining contract and take back Hunter Feduccia?

    • Ron Cervenka says:

      Brewers got Canha.

  4. Stevenbendodger says:

    Not so sure on Grandal.
But maybe better replacement for Barnes.
I can live with the bullpen
    But need a SP.

    What about Verlander 45-50 mil
    For Grove and Busch.

    • Jesse Pearce says:

Grandal can still hit RH pitching, so makes a difference when Smith is not available. For SP, I am wishing for a guy like Pirates Keller, or one of the extra Marlins starters for offense help (Busch, Pages?). I am total thumbs down on the arrogant, cheater Verlander.

    • Jesse Pearce says:

Hard to imagine Kershaw accepting Verlander into the clubhouse. I would be surprised if Verlander waived his no trade rights to join Dodgers and open himself and wife to the abuse of Dodgers fans.

  5. Stevenbendodger says:

My bad. I forgot he was on the Cheaters.
    Don’t want him. Nough said.

  6. Stevenbendodger says:

    Rodriguez Keller Flaherty.

    • Jesse Pearce says:

I would take Keller, especially if Pirates would include closer Bednar for a package of Michael Busch, Michael Grove, Ryan Pepiot, Gavin Stone, and Phil catcher Hunter Feduccia, and Phil Bickford

  7. Stevenbendodger says:

Would make that deal. Even throw in
    Almonte
