It’s no secret that 32-year-old Dodgers outfielder Trayce Thompson has had an awful 2023 season to this point, slashing a less-than-stellar .155/.310/.366/.677 in the 36 games he has appeared in thus far this season.
As such, when Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced that the Los Angeles CA native and second round draft pick in 2009 by the Chicago White Sox out of Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA was going on the 10-day injured list for a strained oblique following his team’s 6-3 loss to the New York Yankees on Saturday afternoon, you could almost hear ‘It’s about time’ (or something similar) echoing throughout Southern California and beyond – at least judging by a number of replies on social media.
“Early indications is that it’s an IL,” Roberts told reporters following Saturdays loss to The Evil Empire. “We’ll see how he comes in tomorrow, but that’s unfortunate.”
Please understand that in no way is anyone wishing any pain or suffering on Thompson, none whatsoever. It’s just that a little down time (and perhaps a little rehabbing at Triple-A Oklahoma City) will do the Dodgers 2022 postseason hero a world of good.
Although there has been no official word from the team yet (as of this writing) as to who will fill Thompson’s spot on the Dodgers 26-man active roster, there is every indication that it will be 24-year-old outfielder Jonny DeLuca, who is currently slashing .315/.375/.548/.923 in the 17 games he has appeared in at OKC; this after slashing .279/.380/.590/.971 in his 32 games at Double-A Tulsa. The Thousand Oaks, CA native was the Dodgers 25th round draft pick in 2019 out of the University of Oregon in Eugene.
An announcement on DeLuca is expect any moment now.
Stay tuned…
