As longtime Dodgers fans know, their beloved team has always been at or near the top of the league in stolen bases. Always.
Not so the 2023 Dodgers.
Through their first 29 games, the Dodgers have stolen a combined 17 bases – tied with the San Francisco Giants (go figure) for 21st in the MLB.
Individually, the current team leader(s) are first baseman Freddie Freeman and outfielder James Outman with four each.
One can only imagine what the late great Maury Wills would have said about this.
Apparently the spirit on Maury is speaking. Over their last five games, the Dodgers stole a combined five bases.
In Sunday’s 6-3 Dodgers win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Dodger Stadium, a one-out single and subsequent steal of second base by Dodgers shortstop Chris Taylor directly led to him scoring the Dodgers sixth and final run of the game after taking third on a wild pitch by Cardinals right-hander Ryan Helsley and scoring on a sacrifice fly to center by Dodgers catcher Will Smith.
As Maury Wills would say with a huge smile:
“Good things come from stolen bases.”
