There’s really not much more to say. Twenty-six-year-old Dodgers left-hander Julio Urías is ready for the regular season. Period.
A bit presumptuous and premature after only two Spring Training starts and only 6.2 Spring Training innings pitched, you say?
Perhaps. Unless you are among the 25 batters who have faced him in those 6.2 Spring Training innings.
Sure, you can argue that the extremely popular Culiacan, Mexico native is 1-1 in those two Spring Training starts, but he also has a team-best and absolutely insane 1.35 ERA, with five strikeouts to go along with his 0.75 WHIP and .200 Batting Average Against. He has also yet to walk a batter this Spring while allowing only one run.
“I was really pleased. I thought he was just in complete control,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told SportsNet LA’s Kirsten Watson after his team’s 8-4 win over the Chicago White Sox at Camelback Ranch – Glendale on Sunday afternoon. “I was really pleased with how efficient he was. We thought we were going to get him into the fourth inning, but he completed that fourth inning, so that was really good to see.”
As most Dodgers fans know, Urías arrived in camp early in preparation for the upcoming World Baseball Classic, in which he will represent Team Mexico. As such, he got a bit of a head start on the other Dodgers starters as far as being ‘stretched out,’ as they say.
During those 4.0 innings pitched on Sunday, Urías allowed no runs and only three hits – all singles – of which two were infield singles to Dodgers third basemen Max Muncy, needing only 49 total pitches to do so.
On the other side of the ball, Urías got some (very) early offensive help, including a leadoff home run from Mookie Betts in the bottom of the first inning off of White Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito on his second pitch of the game.
And then in the bottom of the second inning, blazing hot Dodgers outfielder James Outman crushed an RBI triple off the top of the wall in (very) deep left-center field off of Giolito that was inches from being his second home run in as many days.
Is it Opening Day yet?
