Suffice to say that when 23-year-old Dodgers utility infielder/outfielder Miguel Vargas suffered a hairline fracture to his right pinky while taking infield practice back on March 24, a good many Dodgers fans thought for sure that the team had lost their (presumably) everyday second baseman to a (presumably) lengthy stay on the Injured List.
Lo and behold, not only was the La Habana, Cuba native not placed on the IL, he has played in four of the Dodgers thus far seven Spring Training games and boasts a remarkable .500 On-Base Percentage … without having swung the bat, as he has been instructed not to do.
Yes, the extremely popular young Dodgers second baseman has walked a team-leading four times without swinging the bat even once.
The irony here is that every pitcher that Vargas has faced absolutely positively knew that he was not going to swing. In other words, all they had to do was throw a strike – even if a meatball right down the middle – but were unable to.
As popular Australian actor Paul Hogan would say:
“Good Eye Might!”
Play Ball!
