by Ron Cervenka The Dodgers exciting ninth-inning come-from-behind 7-6 Spring Training win over the San Diego Padres at Peoria Stadium on Monday afternoon came at a huge cost.
While trying to advance from second base to third base on an infield hit in the top of the sixth inning, 25-year-old Dodgers shortstop Gavin Lux suffered what appeared to be a serious injury to his right knee, for which he had to be carted off the field in very obvious pain.
“What I did hear first off was from Gavin, and obviously there’s some fear in there – outside of the knee, he heard something pop,” Roberts told Toribio postgame. “So obviously as a player, you’re thinking the worst. We don’t know a whole lot right now. He’s on his way to get an MRI.”
The injury to Lux poses a significant problem for Roberts and the Dodgers: Who will replace him at shortstop?
“Obviously a guy that you’re expecting to start at shortstop to miss any time is not good,” Roberts added. “I don’t want to jump to any conclusions yet until we get the testing results, but it’s just really unfortunate because Gavin’s done a lot to get ready for this Spring and the season.”
Roberts also told Toribio that 34-year-old utility infielder/outfielder Miguel Rojas, who himself exited Sunday’s game with what was called ‘a right foot cramp,’ will start at shortstop for the Dodgers on Tuesday against the Cincinnati Reds at Camelback Ranch (and presumably for a good portion of the season), adding that 32-year-old utilityman Chris Taylor could also see action in the six hole for the Dodgers while Lux is on the mend.

Per Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, Lux’s MRI revealed a torn right ACL. He will be out for the season and will undergo surgery on March 7.

Buster Olney: The injury to Dodgers shortstop Gavin Lux — who underwent testing yesterday, after he was carted off the field — will keep him off the field for a long time. An industry source: “It is bad.”
Hoping for the best, but, expecting the worst. Not really concerned with covering the SS position on defense. It is the projected offense from Lux that will be missed.
Not to be dismissive of Lux, but over the years it seems that when a door closes another opens — next man up. Who will it be (if Lux is lost for a long period)? Michael Busch? Jorbit Vivas? Luke Williams?
Quite frankly I would say, “None of the above”. It certainly is a major blow to the 2023 season for the Dodgers.I’m afraid they need to swing a trade immediately for a realy good veteran with both defensive skills and offensive ability. With a rookie second baseman learning his way around second base a shortstop with skill and experience is a must.Miguel Rojas is an excellent shortstop but lacks offensive ability and is more of a utility player and late inning defensive player. I think my favorite player for the immediate need is Willie Adames
It will cost unfortunately.
Plus, the fact is that Adames is not available.
Out for the season with a torn ACL. Rats!!

Will he EVER regain enough lateral flexibility and strength in that knee for the movements required of a premium major league shortstop? I hope yes but realistically I kinda doubt it. Not for a very long time that is.
Oh and he might have been our leadoff hitter too? Yikes.
Rojas if ready will start opening day.
CT3 maybe plays a lot at SS.

In 1988 when the Dodgers won the World Series, they had a great fielding starting shortstop who turned 31 during the postseason that year named Alfredo Griffin who hit .199 with one homerun in 354 plate appearances during the regular season. For sure, Rojas is a better hitter than Griffin and he does not strike out a lot, a big plus vs. CT3. I like the fact that CT3 will be back as utility and back-up both the Miguels and Max in the infield. That opens up a spot in the outfield and I am hoping Freddie is an oracle regarding Jason Heyward. Peralta platooning with Thompson in left, kind of a glut of lefthanded hitting outfielders with Heyward, Outman, Duggar and Zimmer, maybe it’s an opp for Andy Pages/Jason Heyward platooning in right field, but Mookie might have to move to CF; not the best idea to move a gold glover ever. Here is my take; the pitching (like 1988) is going to have to be better than great. Freddie, Mookie, Will, J.D. and Max are going to have to carry the run producing responsibilities. If the Miguels and LF and CF(RF) can play good defense and at least be average hitters, this team looks to be fun and exciting. I know the pitchers will appreciate strong defense from guys like Rojas at SS, Peralta and Zimmer in the outfield. Lastly, I really feel bad for Lux, he has worked so hard for this upcoming season to have it all end on a fluke play has got to be heartwrenching.
