Dodgers Release Trevor Bauer

Late Friday afternoon, the Dodgers issued the following statement regarding 31-year-old right-hander Trevor Bauer:

By every indication, now ex-Dodger Trevor Bauer made his final Major League pitch on June 28, 2021 against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park. (LA Dodgers)

The Dodgers have seven days to trade Bauer. If they do not, he will be placed on unconditional release waivers. If no team claims off waivers, he will become a free agent.

So now we wait and see what team claims him off of waivers.

    • Jesse Pearce says:

I read that Dodgers have DFA Bauer, so there could be a 7 day window for trade

      • OhioDodger says:

Yep. They can trade him or put him or put him on waivers before they have to outright release him. Not likely a team picks him up off waivers as they would have to pay his entire salary.

  2. Russ says:

Bauer has said, as of yesterday, it was his understanding the Dodgers wanted him back with the organization. He seemed surprised, but gracious, by the turn of events. Does anyone have an idea what happened with Dodgers decision makers, in the last 24 hours??

    • Jesse Pearce says:

Only what I have read. The Dodgers do a great job of controlling information leaks, so I don’t expect we will ever know the full story.

  3. OhioDodger says:

Padres starting pitching shortage just got fixed.

    • Jesse Pearce says:

That is going to be interesting. I have no doubt that the Padres (and other teams) will offer Bauer a contract for ML minimum, but will Bauer and his representatives direct him away from SD considering the woman involved in this mess is from that area? Bauer may prefer San Francisco, but not likely a contender for WS this season. The Phillies need pitching, as do the Rangers, Angels, White Sox.

  4. Redemocracy says:

Agree with earlier commentator that Bauer would not be kept on the team due to branding issues. All for the best and time to move on. Dodgers can now direct some unfettered attention to gaps in centerfield and shortstop.

    • Jesse Pearce says:

Right now, the Dodgers are less than $101K below the CBT threshold. I don’t think Bauer distracted them from doing due diligence on other acquisitions/transactions (Brand Gomes quotes about roster needs), but it has impacted their payroll budgeting that can only be solved by trading players with higher AAV than those acquired. Dodgers could surprise and blow past the $233M threshold, but I think they are determined to stay below that amount to reset tax penalties as they plan for the talented free agents in 2023-24, and 2024-25.

The plan has been to start using the talented farm system at the major league level. I don’t have a problem with that.
We can also add by trade at any point from now till aug 1.
I think we are still in the race for the west division and on paper are a little behind the Pads. Injuries and performance on the field accounts for at least 20% of overall results. We are still a solid team. Let’s find out what the kids can do.
