It wasn’t a two-run home run on the third pitch of his Major League career, as was Dodgers’ newbie James Outman‘s four days earlier in the Dodgers 7-3 win over the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, but it was an RBI double on the fifth pitch of his Major League career by Dodgers’ new(er)bie Miguel Vargas, to give the Dodgers what would prove to be the winning run in Wednesday nights eventual 3-0 shutout of the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park.
Even though Vargas only went 2-for-4 with two RBI in his MLB debut as the Dodgers designated hitter and not 3-for-4 with three RBI as Dodgers right fielder Outman did in his, it was every bit as exciting for Dodgers fans, especially for the contingent of Vargas’ family members, who made the trip to The City by the Bay for his MLB debut.
“I was really nervous when I was on the on-deck circle, but once I stepped into the box, I didn’t feel anything,” the 22-year-old La Habana, Cuba native told reporters postgame through an interpreter.
To make his first Major League at-bat even more impressive, Vargas promptly stole third base.
“I just felt incredible. I didn’t feel like anyone could stop me,” Vargas said with a laugh.
“He’s been around the game for quite some time and when you understand the game, he’s got a good heartbeat,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of Vargas postgame. “He’s always kind of looking at the field and the game and understands the game, the scoreboard, but it’s an uncanny ability to slow things down.”
But the biggest complement Vargas received for his remarkable MLB debut came from the guy off of whom he got his first hits and RBIs – Giants 11-year MLB veteran pitcher Alex Cobb.
“He’s an impressive hitter,” said the 34-year-old Giants right-hander. “I don’t know how old he is, but he’s a big league bat.”
Another Dodgers big league bat.

@Dodgers It’s so great to see these guys not only make their debut, but really have an impact on games too.
