You Can’t Make This Stuff Up

Much has – and will continue to be – said and written about the Dodgers incredible come-from-behind 7-6 win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium on Wednesday night. And while 29-year-old game hero Hanser Alberto rightfully deserves the lion’s share of accolades for his dramatic ninth inning / one-out / pinch-hit / game-winning single to right field (following pinch-hitter Austin Barnes‘ base-running gaff) to drive in Dodgers center fielder (and birthday boy) Cody Bellinger for the eventual winning run, there was another under-the-radar occurrence during this now-historic final frame.

Instead of easily scoring what would have been the then-game-tying run, Dodgers pinch-hitter Austin Barnes tripped over the third base bag and fell. Fortunately, he was able to return to the bag just ahead of the cutoff throw from Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt.

Enter Max Muncy.

The thirty-one-year-old Dodgers third baseman played all nine innings on Wednesday night, during which he walked four times. But in that now-historic top of the ninth inning, the Midland, TX native and fifth-round draft pick in 2012 by the Oakland Athletics out of Baylor University in Waco, TX, hit a huge sacrifice fly to Cardinals center fielder Dylan Carlson to (eventually) drive in Barnes with the tying run to take Dodgers starter Tony Gonsolin off the hook from suffering his first loss of the 2022 season (to go along with his MLB-best 11 wins). In doing so, Muncy finished the 3:46-hour-long contest without an official at-bat, since walks and sacrifice outs are not considered official at-bats.

Muncy’s final non-at-bat of the night was his huge game-tying RBI sacrifice fly to Cardinals center fielder Dylan Carlson. (Video capture courtesy of SportsNet LA)

In other words, Muncy is credited with a huge RBI while going 0-for-0 at the plate.

“I mean, it’s a good stat line,” Muncy joked postgame. “0-for-0 with an RBI, played a full game.”

Kudos to the boys for not mailing it in when down by 6 runs. Gotta feel good for Hanser. I hope Doc keeps batting Muncy down in the order. 7th or 8th. Phillips was lights out. He is our new Treinen. When Treinen comes back Phillips can close. Sorry Craig but your not reliable enough. Especially in the playoffs.
