It took 93 games into the Dodgers 2022 regular season, but the inevitable finally happened.
During Game-3 of the four-game series against the division-rival San Francisco Giants at Dodger Stadium on Saturday afternoon, ‘The Big Three’ (as they are affectionately known) all homered in the same game – recent Dodgers All-Stars Mookie Betts, Trea Turner, and Freddie Freeman.
Betts hit his, a 379-foot solo shot into the Left Field Pavilion next to the Dodgers bullpen, with two outs in the bottom of the third inning to make it 1-0 Dodgers. Although it was Betts’ team-leading 22nd home run of the season, it was also the 200th of his (future Hall of Fame) career.
Turner immediately followed with a 419-foot shot to left-center field to go back-to-back and make it 2-0. But Freeman did not make it three-back-jacks, instead, lining out to Giants shortstop Thairo Estrada to end the inning (sigh).
The Dodgers did not score again until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Dodgers second baseman Gavin Lux hit his team-leading fifth triple of the season to drive in center fielder Cody Bellinger, who had singled with two outs in the inning, to make it 3-0 Dodgers. One inning later, with one out in the bottom of the seventh, Freeman launched a 391-foot solo shot to right-center field for his 15th home run of the season (tying him for second most on the team with Trea Turner) to make it 4-0 Dodgers.
“I think that’s what you guys [the media] have been talking about since March,” Freeman kidded postgame about the top three in the Dodgers potent lineup. “I wish I hit it the inning they hit it in. But Mookie’s been swinging the bat well. It’s really Mookie’s night, with 200 career homers, it’s pretty special. It was just a good overall day for us.”
Good indeed.
Although the Giants tacked on two runs in the top of the ninth, the Dodgers won the game by a score of 4-2 to take the first three of the four-game series against The Hated Ones.
“Our lineup feeds off those guys. Certainly having those guys get on base, slugging, scoring runs, running deep counts, it just has an exponential effect for the rest of the guys and really taxing for the opposition,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said postgame. “Seeing those guys play the way they are, obviously, as they go, we go.”
Go Mookie! Go Trea! Go Freddie!
Go Dodgers!
Play Ball!
