Sealed With a Kiss

Immediately after 31-year-old Dodgers outfielder Trayce Thompson stepped on home plate following his fifth-inning three-run home run into the Dodgers bullpen on Monday night to turn a (then) 1-0 Colorado Rockies lead into a (then) 3-1 Dodgers lead, he blew his kiss to someone in the Dodger Stadium stands.

Shortly after the Dodgers exciting 5-3 win over the Rockies, AM 570 Dodger Talk host David Vassegh caught up with Thompson and asked him who that kiss was for.

“My mom’s in the stands tonight, that’s for my momma,” Thompson told Vassegh proudly. “She’s my number one supporter, everyone in my family is. But my mom, she’ll drive to the middle of nowhere just to see me play and just to see me. So her support means everything.”

Thompson, who was born in Los Angeles and drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the second round in 2009 out of Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, spent all or parts of six seasons with the White Sox, the Dodgers, the San Diego Padres, the Chicago Cubs, the Oakland Athletics, and back with the Dodgers; hence that “…drive to the middle of nowhere” thing.

Over those six seasons, Thompson hit a combined 28 home runs, including (now) 17 as a Dodger. But prior to his three-run shot on Monday, his last home run at Dodger Stadium came on (wait for it…) July 3, 2016, against (wait for it…) the Colorado Rockies.

“It’s crazy, I remember it like it was yesterday,” Thompson recalled postgame. “It was a day game against the Rockies. Six years have gone by really fast.

“It’s always special to wear this uniform, so I’m just very appreciative, very blessed to be here and trying to make the most of every opportunity,” he added.

As kids today might say, “How cool is that!”

…or as Brian Hyland sang in his 1962 number one hit single, Sealed With a Kiss.
