As the 2022 trade deadline nears, rumors and speculation are running rampant on social media. Among the latest and perhaps biggest is that the Dodgers are now reportedly in on 29-year-old right-hander Luis Castillo of the Cincinnati Reds.
This from MLB Trade Rumors:
“July 11: The Dodgers and Reds have had preliminary talks about Cincinnati starter Luis Castillo, reports Jon Morosi of MLB.com (Twitter link). Los Angeles joins a growing list of contenders known to be in contact with the Reds front office.”

As noted, the list of suitors for the Bani, Dominican Republic native who is signed through this season (at $7,350,000) and becomes arbitration eligible in 2023 and a free agent in 2024, is growing. As such, the Reds will command a significant return for the 6′-2″ / 200-pound hard-throwing right-hander, who has a career record of 43-53 and a career ERA of 3.64 over his six MLB seasons, all with Cincinnati. However, Castillo is 3-4 with a respectable 2.92 ERA in his 12 starts this season.
The NL Central 32-53 last place Reds are seeking position-player help in exchange for Castillo, including and especially a shortstop.

Asking price for Castillo will be too high for a mediocre pitcher. Especially since I don’t believe he would be a difference maker in the playoffs.
