Freddie Freeman Is an Alien … But He’s Our Alien

Here are the numbers:

  • Freddie Freeman went 9-for-11 in the just-concluded three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.
  • In his 14 plate appearances over the three games, Freeman reached base safely 12 times.
  • In the final game of the series on Thursday night, Freeman had two hits, one walk and one run scored.
  • Of his nine hits over the three games, three were doubles, including his now team-leading 30th of the season on Thursday night, and one a home run, his 12th of the season.
  • Freeman drove in two of the Dodgers combined 17 runs over the three games.
  • Freeman now leads all of baseball with 111 hits through the Dodgers thus far 88 games played. He has appeared in all 88 of those games.
  • Freeman is currently hitting .320 on the season, which ranks fourth in the MLB.
  • Freeman is now 13-for-15 in his current six-game hitting streak, becoming one of only two Dodgers since 1974 to do so. The last was Rafael Furcal in 2007.

“It’s just one of those stretches you hope to get in a year, and I’ve been blessed enough to have one the last four games,” Freemen told SportsNet LA’s Kirsten Watson after the Dodgers 4-0 shutout of the Cardinals on Thursday night. “So hopefully I can continue it for a couple more, but to expect this is a little bit too much. But I’m just going to ride this for as long as I can.

“You usually don’t think you’re ever going to get into one of those, because it’s so hard to get into a zone when you face three or four pitchers a game,” Freeman later added. “You don’t talk about it; you just try to ride it as long as you can.”

To be fair, Freeman wasn’t the only Dodgers hero on Thursday night. Dodgers left-hander Tyler Anderson was nothing short of brilliant in his 15th start of the season. The 32-year-old Las Vegas, NV native and first-round draft pick in 2011 by the Colorado Rockies out of the University of Oregon allowed no runs and only three hits, with two walks and four strikeouts in his 6.0 innings of work.

“With a team like that, they have a good lineup over there, you just try and get ahead as much as we can and try to mix,” Anderson said of the Cardinals. “They have a lot of really good hitters over there where you can’t live in the same spot over and over.”

Of his 88 total pitches to the 21 batters he faced on the night, 58 went for strikes. He induced five groundouts and five flyouts in addition to his four strikeouts.

And then there’s 24-year-old Dodgers second baseman Gavin Lux, who hit his fourth home run of the season in the top of the seventh inning – a two-run shot to center field off of Cardinals right-hander Dakota Hudson – to give the Dodgers their four-run lead.

“He got all of that one,” as they say.

“Gavin has been doing pretty incredible all year,” Freeman said of Lux. “He’s been sitting in the nine hole; he’s hitting .300 all year … Gavin’s having a great year and for him to hit a home run and have a great season so far, it’s just good to see.”

The Dodgers return to Southern California to open a three-game interleague series against the Angeles of Anaheim at Angel Stadium on Friday night with their ace and future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw (6-2 / 2.40) on the mound opposite Angels left-hander Patrick Sandoval (3-4 / 2.95). First pitch is set for 6:38 pm PT.
