Let’s be honest: the just-concluded three-game series between the National League West first-place Dodgers and the National League West third-place San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park wasn’t just brutal for the Dodgers; it was brutal for Dodgers fans as well. Watching the best team in baseball get swept by the not-best team in baseball was downright humiliating and demoralizing.
As such, Monday’s scheduled off-day couldn’t come soon enough. Not only do the Dodgers need a day off from baseball, but Dodgers fans need a day off from the Dodgers; again, being brutally honest here.
For the first time in a long time (and about time), Dodgers manager Dave Roberts put the fluff aside and spoke out about his team’s overall performance against the Giants.
“I just think that the urgency to do whatever it takes to win that night, on the offensive side, hasn’t been there,” Roberts said, following Saturday night’s 3-2 loss to the Giants. “Cumulatively, the sum of runs has been there, but the consistency of output hasn’t been there, and that consistency is what helps you win more than you lose.
“It’s getting more clear that we’re not doing enough to win baseball games; we’re too talented,” Roberts added prior to Sunday’s series finale against the Giants. “It’s not about trying. We all know it’s not a try league. We need to all come together to start winning baseball games. That’s the only goal.”
Roberts’ team lost that game by a score of 2-0, having gone 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranding nine runners on base.
During the three-game series sweep by the Giants, the Dodgers left 29 runners on base and went an unacceptable 2-for-24 with runners in scoring position.
“I don’t think we’re doing anything differently. I think it’s obvious when you’re not scoring runs, what you need to do,” Dodgers unofficial team captain Justin Turner told reporters following Sunday’s third straight loss to The Hated Ones. “We’ve done a good job of setting the table. We just haven’t been able to get that big hit to unplug this.”
As noted, the Dodgers return home and have Monday off before hosting a two-game interleague series with the 29-33 AL West third-place Angels of Anaheim, who are 2-8 over their last 10 games.
Play Ball!
* * * * * *
Yes, we do need a day off.
Dodgers playing like they think they are so good that all they have to do is show up and they will win. Time to hold the spoiled millionaires boys club accountable. Roberts needs to shake up the lineup and get in some players faces. Stop swinging for the fence on every pitch. Make contact and move runners up with productive outs. The ball isn’t flying out like it used to. Time to adjust and play some small ball.
Absolutely. Cody Bellinger in particular looks as if he doesn’t even care. He swings at pretty much anything and seems unwilling to show any plate discipline. Just a base hit would be nice to see !
