Just when you think that you’ve seen just about everything that recently acquired Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman has to offer his new team – the NL West first-place Dodgers – he throws yet another treat to “Freddie” chanting Dodgers fans.
In the bottom of the seventh inning of Wednesday night’s 9-1 rout of the (now) NL West fourth-place San Francisco Giants in front of a sold-out Dodger Stadium crowd of 52,203, the 32-year-old Villa Park, CA native and second-round draft pick in 2007 out of El Modena High School in Orange, CA collected his first triple in a Dodgers uniform and the 26th of his 13-year Major League career – a two-RBI shot into the right-field corner – to make it a (then) 7-1 ballgame, and once again causing (seemingly-nightly) “Freddie” chants to echo throughout Chavez Ravine.
“I think that one of the things that’s underrated about Freddie is the baserunning – he was thinking three out of the box,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters following Wednesday night’s contest. “He goes first-to-third as well as anybody, scoring from second base; he knows where the outfielders are at.
“He’s not maybe fleet of foot, but he just really he just rides along. He’s a good runner, a plus baserunner,” Roberts added.
Although his triple was his only hit in his four plate appearances on Wednesday night, Freeman also drew a full-count walk in the fourth inning and came around to score on a sharp line drive single to center by Dodgers catcher Will Smith. He also finished the night with a team-best .299 batting average.
