It was being widely reported on Friday afternoon that even though talks between Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association had made progress towards establishing a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, MLB announced that three additional Spring Training games were being canceled, which means the earliest that Cactus League or Grapefruit League games would begin is now March 8.
Maybe.
Friday’s announcement came on Day-5 of negotiations, with MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred actually in attendance for the first time. Manfred reportedly spoke with MLBPA chief Tony Clark about how the sides can move the process forward towards a new CBA. He did not, however, speak with players who were in attendance, including sub-committee members Max Scherzer, Andrew Miller and Zack Britton.
Although MLB’s announcement on Friday came short of saying that no regular-season games have been canceled, with so much ground yet to be covered towards a new CBA, that announcement appears inevitable. The 2022 regular season is currently set to begin on March 31.
Currently.
Friday’s Spring Training news wasn’t all bad for Dodgers and White Sox fans. The Home Plate Clubhouse Store at Camelback Ranch Glendale announced that it is now open for business for fans to purchase season-specific Spring Training gear, such as hats and jerseys, so there’s that. That being said, local hotels, motels, and restaurants are taking a huge hit because of the delayed start of Spring Training.
And then, of course, there are the thousands of fans who are out a lot of money for tickets to Spring Training games that will never be played, a good many of which are non-refundable.
Again, the news wasn’t all bad on Friday. The two sides exchanged proposals regarding the lottery to determine the amateur draft order. And even though a new format wasn’t definitively agreed upon, the Athletic‘s Evan Drellich reported (via Twitter) that the two sides “made gains” in talks and there is optimism they may soon come to a mutually agreeable solution on that issue.
Stay tuned…

So far our first game on the 7th is canceled. The 8th was a day off. When/if they cancel 3/9 on, the trip I’ve anticipated for 3 years is over. Once again, greed is causing everything. Imagine if they had to have a new contract every year!!
The worse part about it is that neither side cares about such things.
