Are Dodgers About to Lose Their Bench Coach?

When former MLB catcher Bob Geren became the Dodgers bench coach on December 2, 2015, the (then) 53-year-old San Diego, CA native and former first-round draft pick in 1979 by the San Diego Padres did so with five years of managerial experience, having served as manager of the Oakland Athletics from 2007 to 2011 with a career mark of 334-376 (.470). He had also served as bench coach of the New York Mets for five seasons (2011-2015) under (then) Mets manager Terry Collins.

During the 2015 season, the Mets won the National League Championship Series but fell to the Kansas City Royals in five games in the 2015 World Series. While with the Mets, (then) General Manager and (now) team President Sandy Alderson praised Geren for being “tuned into analytics.”

In his six seasons as second-in-command under Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, the Dodgers have a very impressive 542-329 (.622) record which, of course, includes a World Series ring from the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season.

On Tuesday morning, it was being reported on social media that the (now) 59-year-old Geren was going to interview with the New York Mets for their vacant manager position.

There is no disputing that a managerial job is far more prestigious – and far more lucrative – than that of a bench coach. In fact, it has been reported that bench coaches generally earn between $150,000-$250,000 per season. And though the financial terms of Roberts’ current four-year contract with the Dodgers (which runs through the 2022 season) were never disclosed, it is believed to be in the $12 million range.

More lucrative indeed.

As of this writing, it is unknown if the Dodgers have even contacted Geren about returning as the team’s bench coach for the 2022 season.

Then again, it is also unknown if there will even be a 2022 season.

Stay tuned…

  1. @Dodgers They are losing everyone else so why not him too?

  2. Jesse Pearce says:

I think Geren is a long shot to ever manage a major league team. When he was fired by the A’s several of the players complained that he was not a good communicator, and some unnamed baseball people labeled him a terrible on-field manager. He may be in the ideal position to Roberts who has the reputation of being well regarded by the players.

I have had very little contact with Geren during his time with the Dodgers. It has pretty much been “Hey Bob,” and that’s about it. I have also never heard any player(s) say anything about him – good or bad. Then again, I really wouldn’t expect otherwise.

My guess is that he will return as the Dodgers bench coach in 2022.
