It was reported on Saturday that two-time All-Star, two-time Silver Slugger, 2020 World Series MVP, and 2016 National League Rookie of the Year Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager had been given a qualifying offer by the Dodgers … to the tune of $18.4 million.
Although there has been no official word yet from the team or from the 27-year-old Charlotte, North Carolina native and Dodgers first-round draft pick in 2012 out of Northwest Cabarrus High School in Concord, NC, it is a foregone conclusion that Seager, who will undoubtedly receive free agent offers much larger than that, is expected to decline the QO.
The news isn’t all bad, however. By making the qualifying offer to Seager, the Dodgers, should they not re-sign him, will receive compensation if he signs with another team … so there’s that.
As noted, Seager is expected to land a lofty – and lengthy – free agent contract in the coming weeks/months; not a surprise, considering he is represented by none other than baseball’s antichrist Scott Boras.
Seager appeared in 95 games with the Dodgers in 2021, slashing an impressive .306/.394/.521/.915 with 16 home runs, three triples, 22 doubles and 57 RBI. Over his seven MLB seasons – all with the Dodgers – he has an equally impressive slash line of .297/.367/.504/.870, which should indeed make him one of the highest paid players in the game; especially with that Boras thing.
As an interesting side note, Corey’s older brother, longtime Seattle Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager, is also a free agent (and also a Boras client). As farfetched as it may seem (and it is), the thought of a Seager-Seager combination on the left side of the Dodgers infield is intoxicating.
Stay tuned…

I think the odds of Seager agreeing to the QO are about the same as the Dodgers picking up Joe Kelly’s option (none)
With a new CBA looming, I can’t imagine ANYONE accepting a QA.
Excellent point!
The question for the Dodgers is
Seager at 30 mil for 10 years vs
CT3 4 yrs 80 and KJ at
2 for 36.
Commiting 300 mil vs
116. Better value by far
With CT3 and KJ.
Then go after SP.
Could add R Ray for 4 for 80 and still be way under Seager money.
