It is often said ‘There in no such thing as a sure thing.’ If you don’t think so, just follow Major League Baseball for five minutes … or less.
On August 9, 2021, the Dodgers selected 26-year-old right-hander Conner Greene off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles. The Santa Monica native and seventh-round draft pick in 2013 by the Toronto Blue Jays out of Santa Monica High School appeared in two games for the Dodgers (August 10 and August 15), during which he did not allow a run and gave up only two hits in his combined 2.0 innings of work.
On August 20, Conner Greene and his 0.00 ERA as a Dodgers, albeit in only 2.0 innings pitched and after only 28 total pitches, was designated for assignment when the team signed 32-year-old free-agent right-hander Shane Greene.
In his 0.1 inning pitched for the Dodgers thus far (August 22), the Clermont, FL native and 15th round draft pick in 2009 by the New York Yankees out of Daytona State College in Daytona Beach, FL allowed one run on two hits – including a home run – with one walk and no strikeouts to give him a 180.00 ERA as a Dodger and a 9.35 ERA for the season.
On August 23, Conner Greene was claimed off waivers by (wait for it…) the Baltimore Orioles.
Granted, it is ridiculously unfair to compare the two Greenes after only 2.0 and 0.1 innings pitched respectively. But with only 37 regular-season games remaining and the Dodgers trailing the NL West first-place San Francisco Giants by 2.5 games, there is little margin for error when every run allowed and every out recorded by Dodgers pitchers is huge.
