“Never get arrested on a slow news day.”
I kid, of course, as there is never a good day to get arrested. But the meaning of this ages-old saying is very clear – If you get arrested on a slow news day, it may very well end up as front-page news, whereas if you get arrest on a busy news day, you might find it near the back page.
Late Thursday afternoon would have been a good day to get arrested.
Around 5:30 PM PT, it was being widely reported on social media (Twitter) that the Dodgers had successfully pulled off a trade with the Washington Nationals that many Dodgers fans, reporters, and even players had hoped for – 37-year-old / three-time Cy Young Award-winner, eight-time All-Star right-hander Max Scherzer was being traded to the Dodgers.
But wait – There’s more!
The Dodgers are also getting 28-year-old middle infielder/outfielder Trea Turner in the deal.
That’s the good (great) news.
The not-so-great news is that the Dodgers pretty much had to give away the farm to pull off this Mookie-Betts-like trade. They are reportedly sending highly-touted and current Dodgers right-hander Josiah Gray, Dodgers top-ranked catching prospect Keibert Ruiz, right-hander Gerardo Carrillo, and outfielder Donovan Casey to the Nationals in exchange for Sherzer for what amounts to rental for Sherzer, who becomes a free agent at the conclusion of the 2021 season, with Turner becoming arbitration-eligible at seasons end.
Then again, such is the price that Dodgers President of Baseball Operations – and master magician – Andrew Friedman must pay for possible back-to-back World Series titles.

I wonder if getting Scherzer will be worth it, got a feeling that Gray is gonna be a star.
Wondering if Scherzer would sign 2 year deal with LA?

I guess the question is, “How important is it to win the World Series THIS year?”.
this trade has multiple facets. getting T Turner to replace any of the over matched kids in the outfield is a tremendous upgrade he plays there or allows CT and Zmac the chance to play the outfield should they deploy Trea at 2nd. there is also the fact that we wont be facing either of them this year as they could have ended up in SD or SF.
having Turner here can also apply leverage when negotiating with CS5 or Belli moving forward. LA can say “here is our offer. we value you and want you here but we have trea so you aren’t going to hold us hostage.”
dealing both ruiz and Jojo is a high price but from a position of depth, it makes sense. Cartaya will probably be ready before we need him and the pitching options are plentiful once these kids get a little more time to mature. to the best of my recollections, the vast majority of the players AF has trade away have not amounted to much. there was that rookie of the year that was on a team proven to be cheating and a pitcher that failed his PED test, but otherwise we haven’t given up much in these dead line deals. i trust his judgement. assuming that Kersh will be healthy, i would piggy back Gonsolin and Price as a 5th starter to give the pen additional rest. instead of the pen pitching up to 10 of those innings, they may be tasked with two. we did it with Ryu/Maeda a while back when both were building back up and we’ve done it in the past with aging arms.
