It’s hard to argue that Cody Bellinger‘s grand slam in the bottom of the first inning during Wednesday night’s 14-3 pounding of the St. Louis Cardinals at Dodger Stadium was not the highlight of the game. It, along with his two-RBI single earlier in the frame, set a new Dodgers – and MLB – record for most RBIs in the first inning in MLB history. A highlight indeed.
However (and you had to know a ‘however’ was coming), Bellinger’s granny was not the only highlight of the game.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Dodgers starting pitcher Walker Buehler roped a two-out / two-strike bases-loaded double down the right field line, scoring Chris Taylor from third base and Gavin Lux from second to make it a 13-2 ballgame.
Here’s how MLB’s Gameday described it:
“It’s just kind of a blind squirrel finds a nut thing for me up there,” Buehler said postgame of his first career double. “But I’m trying, man, I try and touch it. Today was my best day so far.”
In his 28 plate appearances in the 11 games in which he has appeared thus far this season, Buehler is now 2-for-24 for a .083 batting average, with one walk and 14 strikeouts. That said, he now has a .111 batting average in his five-year MLB career, so he’s got that going for him.
As for his pitching, the Lexington, KY native and Dodgers first-round draft pick in 2015 out of Vanderbilt University is now 4-0 on the season with an impressive 2.83 ERA. He has struck out 70 while walking only 13 for an excellent .095 WHIP and has limited opposing hitters to a .213 batting average against.
Play Ball!

I guess a lot of pitchers’ batting records will be gone if the universal DH rule comes into effect.
Good point, Joe. From what I read yesterday, the universal DH will be one of the top priorities at the upcoming MLB/MLBPA Collective Bargaining meetings.
