by Ron Cervenka On Saturday morning, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts again told reporters during his pregame Zoom media scrum that Dodgers ace and future Hall of Fame left-hander Clayton Kershaw would be his Opening Day starter against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on April 1. He then said – for the first time – that his number-two would be right-hander Trevor Bauer, his number-three right-hander Walker Buehler, and his number-four left-hander Julio Urias. What he would not say is who his fifth starter would be.
Kershaw started for the Dodgers in Friday’s Cactus League game against the Oakland Athletics at Camelback Ranch. Bauer started on Saturday against the Cleveland Indians also at CBR, and Buehler will start on Sunday evening in Game-1 of the annual Spring Training Freeway Series at Angels Stadium.

Now I’m not a rocket scientist, and fortunately, this doesn’t require you to be, but it’s a pretty safe bet that May will be the Dodgers fifth starter – at least to begin the 2021 season for the defending World Series Champions.

Could it change?
Absolutely.
In fact, Roberts has the luxury to utilize a six-man starting rotation with right-hander Tony Gonsolin or left-hander David Price, if he so chooses.
What a wonderful problem to have.

UPDATE: Gonsolin will now start Sunday’s Freeway Series game in Anaheim which, of course, throws a monkey wrench into this whole theory.

It’s certainly going to be a weird year for pitchers…early on we have more building up of arm strength to do and keeping everyone healthy will mean lots of appearances by lots of pitchers. I suspect and hope we protect all our arms as well as develop both May and Gonsolin into reliable starting pitchers. They have the talent and we have the depth to manage our way through an unusual season. Just expect your scorecard to look like an eye chart.
