The Dodgers ‘Chris Army Knife’

During his daily Zoom media session on Wednesday afternoon, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was asked where he plans to utilize 30-year-old utility infielder/outfielder Chris Taylor the most during the 2021 season.

It’s probably safe to say that most Dodger fans expected the Dodger skipper to answer with the obvious – second base and give Cody Bellinger and AJ Pollock an occasional blow in center field left field, respectively. It’s also probably safe to say that most Dodger fans did not expect Roberts’ answer.

“I see Chris at second base, I see him a little bit at short, we know he can play short, I see him in center field a little bit, I see him in left field, and I also see him at third base,” Roberts answered. “Right now, you’re looking at the roster, and Justin [Turner], you’ve got two left-handed bats in Eddie Ríos and Matt Beaty, but I also like Chris taking grounders over there and getting familiar more at third base, too.”

Who knew. A Swiss Army Knife if ever there were one, right? Or better still, as ThinkBlueLA.com Twitter follower @dreadsc0tt put it: “The Chris Army Knife.”

Brilliant!

During his seven-year MLB career, the Virginia Beach, VA native and fifth-round draft pick in 2012 by the Seattle Mariners out of the University of Virginia, appeared in a total of 235 games at shortstop, 147 in left field, 125 in center field, 78 at second base, and (wait for it…) 25 games at third base. And for good measure, our Chris Army Knife also appeared in three games in right field and was used as a designated hitter 10 times. That leaves only pitcher, catcher, and first base where Taylor has not played.

Taylor’s combined fielding percentage at those seven positions in those seven seasons is a very respectable .967 (50 errors in 1,503 total chances). He also has a respectable .263/.335/.444/.779 career slash line, with 59 home runs, 121 doubles, 22 triples, and 236 RBI with his right-handed bat.

Although Taylor hit only one home run during the 2020 World Series, it came off of 2018 AL Cy Young award winner Blake Snell in Game-2. Worth noting, the Tampa Bay Rys traded Snell to the San Diego Padres during the offseason. (Video capture courtesy of Fox Sports)

Taylor, who will make $7.8 million in 2021, becomes a free agent at the conclusion of the season.

@Dodgers Thanks for the Cred. We will be at the Dodger vs Brewers on the 16th. We can’t wait.

  2. I hope the Dodgers don’t let Taylor go like they did Pederson and Hernandez when the season ends.

      It’s all about the money.

The Dodgers have A LOT of talent down on the farm.

    • SoCalBum says:

Taylor is unique in that he is willing to play any position that helps the team and he continues to put up above average offensive stats. If he is willing to play for about the same money he is getting now I think he could sign a three year, $25M contract after this season. Right now, there is not another RH hitting prospect who can fill the shoes of Taylor.
