It is one of those things that has been in the back of my mind since the day he played his final major league game on September 30, 2018, against the San Francisco Giants at (now) Oracle Park (previously AT&T Park, previously SBC Park, Previously Pac Bell Park):
“Chase Utley – Dodgers coach”
And even though the soon to be (on December 17) 42-year-old Pasadena native, who was initially drafted by the Dodgers in the second round in 1997 but did not sign, will undoubtedly enter the sacred Halls of Cooperstown wearing a Philadelphia Phillies hat, with whom he did sign in 2000 out of UCLA as their first-round pick, he played that final game – and 385 of his combined 1,937 MLB games played – wearing a Dodger cap. He was also one of the most beloved Dodger players by his teammates and Dodger fans alike.
Utley finished his Hall-of-Fame-worthy career with a slash line of .275 / .358 / .465 / .823, with 259 career home runs and 1,025 career RBI. Over his four seasons with the Dodgers, he slashed .235 / .236 / .315 / .381, with 26 home runs and 109 RBI. He is also a six-time All-Star, four-time Silver Slugger, and a World Series champion in 2008 with the Phillies.
Late Saturday morning, it was widely reported that extremely popular (and World Series champion) Dodgers first base coach George Lombard had accepted a position with the Detroit Tigers to serve as their bench coach under (wait for it…) former fired Houston Astros manager AJ Hinch; and just like that, “Chase Utley – Dodgers coach,” was immediately in the forefront of my mind.
…and (apparently) many others.
On Saturday afternoon, I posted this on Twitter:
Over the next 12 hours, that tweet received nearly three thousand likes, retweets, and comments … and counting.
Will it happen?
Probably not.
Should it happen?
Unequivocally.
Play Ball!

@Dodgers Whatever it costs. I’d die if he managed/played/coached against us
@Dodgers #TheMan 💙⚾️
@Dodgers Omg YES PLEASE
Chase Utley is a once in a lifetime all around great baseball player, student and coach. I sincerely hope the Dodgers Front Office recognizes his potential value on this championship team.
@Dodgers YES!!!! DO IT!
@Dodgers Yes!!!! I was just talking about this
I believe Chase would make a great coach n would also make L.A. proud go Dodgers2021.
Making Utley a coach would be terrific, but unlikely. For me, I would rather see him as bench coach responsible for infielders and the hitting mentor for Cody Bellinger.
The day Chase retired I wanted him back as a coach, never been a Dodger player I respected more then Chase, but I don’t think it will happen.
no no no no !!!! dodger fan here ( hard core ) . please don’t do that , not him
OK, since you said so. But, may I ask why?
Chase Utley would be a great first base coach and a tremendous addition.
