If the name Mookie Betts immediately comes to mind, welcome to the club. He certainly has the resume to support that status.
Over his 842-game career, the 27-year old right fielder has a .900 OPS – comparable to Hall of Famers Ken Griffey Jr. and Mike Schmidt, and his 1.078 OPS for the 2018 season is equivalent to the best OPS years of Hall of Famers Willie Mays and Hank Aaron. For the 2020 season, Betts is slashing .304/.377/.586/.993 and is exceeding his career average in every category.
Case closed, right?
Not necessarily so – at least not for the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season. Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager and catcher Will Smith are also worthy of consideration as the Dodgers’ best hitter.
Seager is slashing .309/.357/.602/.959 – very comparable to Betts and making him a legitimate candidate for the 2020 National League MVP.
Smith, who has less than one year of ML service, has a robust .303/.417/.597/1.012 slash line, albeit with ~100 fewer plate appearances than either of his teammates.
There are other advanced batting stats that may help differentiate between The Three Amigos.
OPS+ compares MLB hitters to the statistical average hitter. Betts OPS+ is 161, or 61% better than the average hitter in 2020; Seager 148; and Smith an incredible 178.
w/RC+ is a Fangraphs stat for the runs a hitter creates. Mookie’s w/RC+ for 2020 is 161 (61% better than the statistical average player); Seager 148; and Smith 131.
Statcast tracks players’ performances in the percentage of time a player barrels a pitch, percent of hard-hit balls, and average exit velocity. Seager is first amongst all Dodgers hitters in each of these three categories; Smith is second in barrels and hard-hit balls and third in exit velocity. Betts is fourth in barrels and exit velocity and ninth in barrels.
What do you think Dodgers fans? Who is the best Dodger hitter for the 2020 season?
A good case can be debated for any one of these fine players.

@Dodgers Seager Smooth.
I think the Dodgers best hitter is either Mookie Seager or Corey Betts. I’d take either one on any day!
I see what you did there.
Sorry, my brother. I am officially a card-carrying member of the Mookie Betts ‘Chowder and Marching Club’ – especially after his postgame interview on Friday night (see Saturday morning’s article).
In no way am I dismissing the GREAT seasons that Seager and Smith (and Chris Taylor, I might add) are having, but what Betts brings to the team – especially the intangibles in the Dodgers clubhouse – make him, hands down, THE best hitter the Dodgers have had in decades.
Fire away.
I will not even attempt to debate your choice. I knew Betts was good, but as I watch him play every game there is a deeper admiration of his talent. For me, I am glad that Seager can even be compared with him for this season. The Dodgers need both, and I am hoping Dodgers sign Corey to an extension, soon.
The contest between who should the Dodgers’ sign – Corey Seager or Cody Bellinger is starting to turn in Corey’s favor. We’ll still have next year to make the decision…
