Over the past two days, the Dodgers PR Department has conducted a series of Zoom media press conferences with several Dodgers players and manager Dave Roberts. To date, these pressers have included Dodgers president and CEO Stan Kasten, Roberts, staff ace Clayton Kershaw, veteran third baseman Justin Turner, and All-Star right-hander Walker Buehler.
During Friday’s media session, Kershaw referred to the trust that he has in his teammates to do the right thing when away from Dodger Stadium with regards to the strick coronavirus protocols that we all must adhere to:
“There’s a trust factor there with Major League Baseball, the players union, my teammates – everybody here has to take accountability for being as safe as possible, and I have trust in that, that we’re doing everything possible.
“And at the end of the day, I wanted to play. That’s one of the biggest driving factors. If MLB and the players union feels it’s safe for us to be here, then I feel it’s OK to give it a shot. Guys that do opt-out, I get that. We’re going to support that as a team.”
Lo and behold and independent of Kershaw’s comments, on Saturday afternoon, Buehler had this to say:
“I think people are going to get sick. A lot of people are in our clubhouse, in other clubhouses, how, why, or what, but people are going to get sick just like they are all over the country. So, I think knowing or trusting your teammates that they weren’t doing anything or put themselves in a crazy amount of risk or doing something they shouldn’t have been doing, it was a big thing.
“I think that our teammates are close, and having gone through seasons with a core group that’s pretty tight, it’s going to help. I’ll just refer it that way and hope, in the MLB, nobody gets sick.”
With the number of COVID-19 cases (and deaths) increasing by the minute, it is imperative that the entire Dodgers organization – and all of us – trust each other to do the right thing.
…just as Kershaw and Buehler are doing.
Play Ball!
