It was one of those things that immediately made you say “Oh [expletive]!”
It happened with no outs in the bottom of the fifth inning of the Dodgers eventual 9-1 rout of the San Francisco Giants at a fan-less Dodger Stadium on Friday night when a generously-listed 6′-1″ / 195-pound Chris Taylor had a violent collision with a ridiculously-listed 5′-10″ / 268-pound Pablo Sandoval; ridiculous in that the 33-year old / 13-year MLB veteran easily tops the scale at over 300 pounds.
Remarkably, after a tense minute or two, Taylor proclaimed that he was OK and ready to continue.
“It was a bad one. I think CT’s going to have a little bit of some soreness tomorrow because he landed square on his back and Pablo is built like a fire hydrant,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of the collision (via Zoom) after the game. “I don’t like that match-up as far as the head-to-head collision, but Chris assured me that he was OK.
“The stolen base attempt after that, that sequence, let’s just hope that he feels fine tomorrow.”
Roberts added that Taylor will be in Saturday’s starting lineup for Game-3 of the four-game set against The Hated Ones.
“I plan on having him in there, but I’m sure there’s going to be some residual soreness.”
As for that “fire hydrant” thing, those watching the game and following on social media had a slightly different description of the collision:
But regardless, thankfully, the 29-year-old Taylor appears to be no worse for wear after his encounter with a fire hydrant.

@Dodgers 😂
17 runs in the first two games. A great start. Only gave up 2 runs, wow!!
…and only one walk in 18 innings!
As a person very dear to me often said: “Walks kill you.”
A new term for being crushed — I have been sandovaled.
