The Dodgers have officially announced their 2020 coaching staffs for each level of their minor league affiliates, with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes seeing major changes as they begin their 10th season as the Dodgers Advanced Single-A affiliate.
Wearing the manager’s hat in 2020 will be former Quake Austin Chubb, who was initially drafted in 2012 by the Washington Nationals as a catcher out of Florida Southern College. He made it as high as the Class-A Hagerstown Suns before electing free agency in January 2015 and signed with the Dodgers a few weeks later, playing at three different levels before once again electing free agency.
Chubb was with the Quakes in 2015 when they won their first California League Championship in over 20 years.
“It’s a little surreal to come back to Rancho as a manager just five years after playing there,” said Chubb. “I’m excited! We’ll do our best to continue the winning tradition for the fans.”
In 2016, the Lake Mary, FL native became the hitting coach for the Dodgers Pioneer Rookie League affiliate Ogden Raptors and got his first managerial experience with one of the Dodgers two Dominican Summer League teams in 2017 and 2018. He returned to Ogden in 2019 to manage the Raptors, leading them to the Pioneer League finals with a truly impressive overall record of 54 wins and just 22 losses.
Chubb will be taking over for Mark Kertenian, who managed the Quakes to the California League South finals in 2019 with a record of 81-57. Kertenian himself received a promotion, having been named as bench coach for the Triple-A Oklahoma City Dodgers for 2020.
Ryan Dennick will be taking over the reins of pitching coach from Connor McGuinness, who has been called up to the Dodgers as assistant pitching coach.
Dennick was drafted in 2009 by the Kansas City Royals out of Tennessee Tech and made his way up through the system over the years, ending up in the Cincinnati Reds organization. He made his major league debut with the Reds in September of 2014, appearing in eight games. He began the 2015 season at Triple-A Louisville but was designated for assignment and claimed off waivers by the Dodgers, who assigned him to Double-A Tulsa. He appeared in 47 games with the Drillers and three with the OKC Dodgers, electing free agency at the end of the season.
In 2016, Dennick joined the independent league Lancaster Barnstormers. He became a free agent after the season and eventually rejoined the Dodgers as a player development coach in 2018.
Dustin Kelly returns for his second season as the Quakes hitting coach. The Santa Maria, CA native was drafted by the Boston Red Sox out of Cuesta College in 2004. He played with them through 2006, making it as high as Double-A with the Portland (ME) Sea Dogs.
Kelly began his coaching career in 2007 at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo as the hitting and infield coach. He remained a coach with them through 2010 and began giving private lessons through Elite Baseball. He began his Dodgers coaching career in 2018 with Ogden as their hitting coach.
The fourth and final coach for the Quakes in 2020 will be Jason Bourgeois, who was initially drafted by the Texas Rangers in 2000 out of Forest Brook High School in Houston, TX. He made his major league debut in 2008 with the Chicago White Sox and also saw action with the Brewers, Astros, Royals, Rays, and Reds throughout his eight years in the majors.
Bourgeois signed with the Diamondbacks in late 2015 but was eventually traded to the White Sox, where he remained through 2017. In 2018 he played in the Mexican League at the Triple-A level and spent last season with the Dodgers Midwest League Single-A affiliate Great Lakes Loons. He will make his way to Rancho Cucamonga to round out the 2020 Quakes coaching staff.

Good stuff, Lauren, thanks. Austin is a great guy. I’ve got a really good feeling about the 2020 Quakes.
