Late Sunday evening it was widely reported – and subsequently confirmed – that 29-year-old (on his birthday, no less) free agent left-hander Alex Wood, was returning to the Dodgers on a one-year/$4 million deal that includes performance incentives that could make the deal worth $10 million.
In his four seasons with the Dodgers, the Charlotte, North Carolina native and 2012 second-round draft pick by the Atlanta Braves out of the University of Georgia posted a combined 31-20 record and 3.46 ERA in 86 games (74 starts), while striking out 401 and walking 121 in his combined 434.2 innings pitched.
Over his seven major league seasons, Wood owns a 53-43 record, with a respectable 3.40 ERA and 1.223 WHIP.
The former Georgia Bulldog is perhaps best remembered by Dodger fans for his outstanding performance in Game-4 of the 2017 World Series against the Houston Astros in which he took a one-hitter into the sixth inning. He followed that up with two shutout innings in (fateful) Game-7.
Wood was included in the 2018 blockbuster trade that sent him, Yasiel Puig, Matt Kemp and Kyle Farmer to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for veteran right-hander Homer Bailey (whom the Dodgers immediately released) and highly-touted middle-infield prospect Jeter Downs and equally highly-touted hard-throwing right-hander Josiah Gray.
Although some may see the Wood signing as insignificant, for one-year and a minimum of $4 million, this could prove to be the deal – and steal – of the year for the Dodgers.
Welcome back, Alex!
Play Ball!

It’s good to have Alex Wood back. Good luck to him, this time around.
Glad to see Alex back. Still hope for another addition but again I like Alex and what he offers.
If healthy a terrific addition to the team. I was hoping for his return, but thought it was a long shot
With Nelson and Wood on board does it open us to deal Maeda?
I hope so. Maeda’s me first attitude has permanently soured me on him being a Dodger. Don’t let the door hit you where the Lord split you!
I agree with you. Although what we read on the internet may not give us the total picture.
If Maeda is just arguing to start because of his current contract, I can understand that, rework it. But if he believes it’s starter or bust, he’s gone.
Dodgers have money, prospects and lots of MLB talent depth. Let’s make a deal.
Maeda, Pederson, Baez, Taylor or Hernandez all have trade value. I’d like to see Dodgers trade for someone like A.J. Puk (2016 6th overall pick) with Oakland. But unlike most, I am OK going into 2020 with what we already have, although we could still use and have room for a right-handed bat. A cheap more mature Puig (if the players approve) would be OK with me.
Nelson and Wood were good signings. I hear Dodgers also have interest in Danny Salazar. Gotta love cheap, high upside signings when you already have adequate depth.
And when all is said and done, we have basically seen how much more effective he’s been out of the BP for the most part as well.
