by Ron Cervenka During last week’s MLB Winter Meetings in San Diego, CA, the Minnesota Star Tribune reported that former Dodgers left-hander and 2019 MLB ERA title holder Hyun-Jin Ryu wanted to stay in the National League or American League West. But when speaking with reporters following an awards ceremony in Seoul, South Korea, Ryu told reporters: “I’ve never once said anything like that.
“No matter where I end up, I’ll just try to pitch the best I can,” Ryu added.
In San Diego, Ryu’s agent, Scott Boras, told reporters: “Geography is something that players look at and evaluate, but I don’t think it’s an overriding consideration. The distance from Seoul to any major league franchise, I am not sure it’s relevant.”
Ryu agreed with his agent, adding that, like all other players, he wants to keep his options open. He then said what Dodgers fans did not want to hear:
“If the Dodgers wanted to re-sign me, they would have told my agent. I haven’t heard from him yet, and honestly, I don’t have much to tell you right now.”
Although there is still plenty of time for the 32-year-old Incheon, South Korea native to re-sign with the seven-time NL West Division champion Dodgers, there is equally plenty of time to sign with any of the other 29 MLB teams; this at a time when the list of top-tier free-agent starting pitchers is rapidly dwindling.

Ryu wants to keep his options open, so do Dodgers.
We have dollars, prospects and MLB talent available for acquisitions. What to do? Does the Snot Rocket’s age, injury history, increased spin rates, but loss of draft pick make him a better value than Ryu? By how much? Now that we’ve added Clevinger to the Lindor trade talk, can we forget about Lindor and just get Clevinger? Should we build a DOMINATE bullpen and go with the starters we have? Lots of options!
If Ryu wants to remain a Dodger, tell Boros to make the Dodgers an offer they can’t refuse.
The Dodgers have to learn that not everyone wants to be a Dodger. It is more important to be wanted by the Dodgers than to be a Dodger.

I mentioned this yesterday that what ya said about not every player wants to be a Dodger is true and in part it’s because of how Roberts manages the games and more importantly how he mis-manages the pitching, which we have seen the results in October.
Agree with comment on Robert’s mismanagement of pitching, Ryu in particular.
He doesn’t trust him enough after he makes a few bad pitches, Ryu gets the hook in favor of ineffective bullpen.
Deep down, I think that this might be the reason Dodgers haven’t offered a contract to Ryu.
Reported in last 24 hours that Dodgers have recently discussed re-signing Ryu with his agent Scott Boras. Ryu’s pride may have been unintentionally damaged by typical negotiating styles of Friedman and Boras. Hopefully the parties can get together and reach agreement on a fair deal for Ryu to return to the Dodgers.
This sounds good, I hope a lot of “good” comes out of it.

It may come down to 5 yrs at 110 mil for Bumgarner who is younger and healthier than RYU or RYU at 4 yrs 80 mil who has a clear injury history. I would sign Bummer he brings a needed attitude and desire to win to our young club.
Most of Ryu’s “clear injury history” was a torn labrum which he had before crossing the pond. That has been repaired and we can see how he’s done since.
Not sure why you think that. He pitched 2 full and robust seasons before his shoulder injury. Then later had the torn groin muscle.
Ryu had the torn labrum before signing with the Dodgers, which they knew about. He pitched those “2 full and robust seasons” with it.
He’s obviously a better pitcher now, with a healthy shoulder.
