Shortly before 5 p.m. PT on Sunday afternoon, Dodgers outfielder Cody Bellinger was named the 2019 Rawlings National League Gold Glove award winner for right fielders. The announcement came during The 2019 Rawlings Gold Glove Awards Show aired live on ESPN.
The 24-year-old Scottsdale, AZ native and Dodgers fourth-round draft pick in 2013 out of Hamilton High School in Chandler, AZ is the first Dodger to win a Gold Glove since former Dodgers right-hander Zack Greinke did so in 2015 and is the first Dodgers outfielder to win the award since Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp both won in 2011.
The 2017 National League Rookie of the Year joins Ethier, Kemp, Steve Finley (2004), Raul Mondesi (1995, 1997), Dusty Baker (1981), Willie Davis (1971-1973) and Wally Moon (1960) as Dodgers outfielders to receive baseball’s highest defensive award.
In only his third season with the Dodgers, Bellinger led the National League with a .990 fielding percentage among right fielders, making only two errors in 210 total chances. He ranked seventh in the NL in innings played (911.1), second in outfield assists (10), second in Ultimate Zone Rating [UZR](9.5), second in Range Runs [RngR] (five), and first in both UZR per 150 games (15.3) and Defensive Runs Saved (19).
Bellinger appeared in a combined 136 games in the outfield (right and center), making only three errors in 253 total chances. He was among the National League’s overall outfield leaders in assists (10, T-4th), fielding percentage (.988, 11th), RngR (6.2, 5th), UZR (10.3, 2nd), UZR/150 (13.7, 2nd) and innings played (1,082.0, 16th). He finished tied for second in the majors with San Diego’s Hunter Renfroe in defensive runs saved by an outfielder (22), behind only Washington’s Victor Robles (24).
Gold Glove winners are determined in a vote by each NL manager and up to six coaches on his staff from a pool of qualified players in their league and cannot vote for players on their own team. In 2013, Rawlings added a sabermetric component to the Rawlings Gold Glove Award selection process as part of its collaboration with the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). The SABR Defensive Index comprises approximately 25 percent of the overall selection total, with the managers and coaches votes accounting for rest.
The entire staff at ThinkBlue LA extends a hearty congratulations to Belly on his outstanding accomplishment; the first of what figures to be many.

It’s great to see a Dodger win a Gold Glove. Congrats to Belli.
Congratulations Belli!
To the Front Office and Andrew Friedman:
We’ve all have waited long enough as fans to win a World series Championship. This coming offseason, the Dodgers have money under the cap, approx 45 million, a strong farm system to make trades, drawing nearly 4 million fans, a lucrative TV deal which equates into one the highest revenue streams in all of baseball. There are no more excuses for signing at least one of the big FA,Rendon,Cole or Strassburg. There are no excuses and the only excuse is not getting it done.I personally would sign Rendon for the much needed right hand bat to balance the lineup with a high per year and shorter term in years.. A secondary move would be to acquire Wheeler. I watch Met games if the Dodgers are not on and he has one of the best fastballs in baseball. With working with new pitching coach Prior, he could develop into something special .With a loaded talented farm system and regulars like Pederson,Stripling, Barnes and Kiki or Taylor, the Dodgers could trade and acquire much needed bullpen help. Your going to lose an important fan base if you bring back the same cast of characters and make no MAJOR changes.
Some interesting takes. Can’t say I disagree with several of them.
