Is it possible or are our eyes deceiving us? Has three-time All-Star and two-time National League Reliever of the Year Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen finally found the magic again or is this just a blip on the radar?
Get in, sit down, strap in and hang on, because we are about to find out … and not a moment too soon.
Over the past two months, the soon-to-be (on September 30) 32-year-old Willemstad, Curaçao native has been… well… awful, having blown five saves and given up an un-Jansen-like five home runs since June 15.
However, in Sunday night’s exciting come-from-behind 3-2 win over the New York Mets at Citi Field, the 10-year MLB veteran right-hander with arguably the best cutter in the game today was the Kenley Jansen of old, although he had to settle for a win rather than a save, as the Dodgers took two of three from New York.
“My cutter is a feel pitch, and when I feel it click, you’ve got to hold on to it,” Jansen told reporters after his outstanding inning of work during which he retired the side on 10 pitches including striking out Mets superstar first baseman Pete Alonso on three pitches. “I’ve been searching the whole year. I finally figured it out. You see the life, the rise, and the cut again. It’s made me become a better pitcher because I’ve used secondary pitches and I’ve got more weapons.
“I don’t know how to explain it, it’s just muscle memory when I’m doing things well, and for some reason, it just clicked,” Jansen added. “Now that we’ve clinched, it’s just get ready for the playoffs.”
What did the ‘judge’ in this matter – Dodgers manager Dave Roberts – have to say about his All-Star closer?
“Very important for his confidence, for the team’s confidence, and he understands that,” Roberts said. “The needle’s moved in the right direction.”
That being said, us jurists will need a little more proof that ‘California Love’ is indeed back before rendering our verdict.
…but the evidence is definitely mounting in his favor.
Play Ball!
* * * * * *
It’s a very good feeling to watch Kenley pitch like he use to and Sunday night really gives promise that he is back to his old self.
anybody else see him shake off no less than four pitch calls in a row?
i was waiting for him to mouth “just call the damn cutter”
10 pitches; 8 cutters, 2 sliders. Sliders 82 mph, cutters from 93 mph to 94.5 mph (last pitch to Alonso)! Welcome back Mr. Jansen!!
Think I´ll just watch and see a little more before making a decision.
Which is exactly the point, hence ‘Jury Still Out.’
While the “Jury may still be out” with Jansen, the jury hasn’t even been seated for Vazquez.
Looks like Dodgers dodged a MAJOR bullet with that guy. Very happy we still have Lux, May and ???? instead of Vazquez.
