ThinkBlueLA has learned that 21-year-old middle infielder Jeter Downs has been promoted from the Dodgers Advanced Single-A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes to their Double-A affiliate Tulsa Driller.
As most Dodger fans know, Downs was acquired in the trade that sent outfielders Yasiel Puig and Matt Kemp, catcher/utility infielder Kyle Farmer, and left-hander Alex Wood to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for Downs, 21-year-old, top-ranked right-hander Josiah Gray (who himself was promoted to Double-A Tulsa on July 12) and 33-year-old/13-year MLB veteran right-hander Homer Bailey, who the Dodgers immediately released.
Downs was initially selected by the Reds in the first round of the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Monsignor Edward Pace High School in Miami Gardens, FL. He is currently ranked as the Dodgers 10th overall prospect by Baseball America and posted a slash line of .269/.354/.507/.862 in the 107 games (179 plate appearances) in which he appeared with the Quakes. He also slugged 19 home runs, one behind current team leader Donovan Casey‘s 20.
Shortly after learning of Downs’ promotion, he posted this photograph on Twitter:
According to sources, the corresponding roster move will bring 22-year-old utility infielder Devin Mann back to Rancho Cucamonga. Mann was placed on the seven-day injured list on July 18 (retroactive to the July 15) for an undisclosed injury and reassigned to the Arizona Summer League Dodgers to rehab. Prior to that, the Columbus, IN native and Dodgers fifth-round draft pick in 2018 out of the University of Louisville in Louisville, KY was slashing a very impressive .281/.357/.500/.857, with 17 home runs and 56 RBI. Mann is currently ranked as the Dodgers 18th overall prospect by Baseball America.
